Eight dogs at risk of being euthanized at a crowded Newark animal shelter have been saved, according to the Associated Humane Society of Newark.

“We called, you answered! We’re thrilled to share that all 8 dogs from our recent deadline plea are now SAFE — either adopted into forever homes or rescued! Your support truly makes a life-changing difference,” AHS Newark posted on social media.

Olivia Gonzalez, the shelter’s social media manager, previously said that the facility is overwhelmed.

“The need here is so incredibly great,” Gonzalez said. "There are dogs coming in every day.”

The shelter has a waitlist of owners who have called wanting to surrender their pets that reaches into February 2026.

Gonzalez says many people surrender because they simply can’t afford to care for the pet.
