One person was killed and another was critically injured after they were struck by a vehicle in Newark, authorities said Friday.

The crash happened at at approximately 4:30 a.m. at 104 Empire St., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Authorities said two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The vehicle involved fled the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Officials have not released the identities of the victims pending notification of their next of kin.
