The family of a Yorktown teen killed in Chicago is speaking out after the man accused of her murder was found with a weapon in jail.
Authorities said Jose Medina was found with a six-inch blade while in custody. He is now charged with possessing contraband in addition to murder.
The 25-year-old Venezuelan migrant is accused of shooting 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman in March.
Outside court in Chicago on Monday, the teen’s family called Medina dangerous and renewed their call for immigration reform:
“This has to change. It has to stop here. It has to stop now. Before another child is taken, stolen. Before another mother is destroyed.”
Medina’s attorney said her client is severely disabled and felt the need to protect himself while in jail.
The attorney added that Medina has not been charged in any additional cases.
