The Yonkers Women in Law Enforcement group offered new and gently used prom dresses to Hudson Valley students Saturday at a prom dress giveaway in Yonkers.
The annual event called Madrina's Closet, is now in its fourth year, also offered free jewelry, shoes, suits and ties to high school seniors.
No one was turned away, as graduating seniors arrived at the P.A.L. Building at 127 North Broadway.
The event is the brainchild of Yonkers Police Detective Vionett Martinez.
"This year alone...Westchester Latinos Unidos donated over 500 dresses. Yesterday, we had man who came in with...I would say maybe 100 to 200 suits and jackets...There's hundreds of them," she said.
Yonkers High Student senior Albina Khabibullina chose a dark blue gown with silver sparkles to wear to her prom on June 11.
"I came here with my friend Selah. I thought it would be such a nice girls' thing to do because we met in the ninth grade. So going to prom together is a milestone and going dress shopping together it's a girls' milestone that every girl should hit," she said.
The giveaway continues Sunday from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.
