A Wyandanch man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for shooting another man outside Jake’s 58 Casino, according to Suffolk County prosecutors.
Nashawn Legros, 26, previously pleaded guilty in February to the May 2024 shooting of Steffan Bumpers.
“This brazen act of violence has no place in Suffolk County,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “My office is committed to holding violent offenders accountable. That message should be clear from this sentence as the defendant will now spend a decade in prison for this violent attack in a public place.”
During his plea allocution, Legros admitted to firing two shots at Bumpers as he walked through the parking lot toward the casino, striking him in the chest. Despite his injuries, Bumpers was able to get back up and make his way inside with help before collapsing.
Legros then fled the scene.
Prosecutors say one bullet entered Bumpers’ chest and traveled through his body cavity, damaging multiple organs, including his intestines, colon and diaphragm. Surgeons performed emergency procedures to remove fluid around his heart and lungs and used more than 40 staples to repair the damage.
The second bullet remains lodged in his pelvic bone.
After completing his prison sentence, Legros will be subject to five years of supervision.
