Women's Equality Day is being marked across the country Wednesday, commemorating 106 years since women gained the constitutional right to vote.

The observance marks the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, guaranteeing women the right to vote.

Connecticut state Sen. Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox said the anniversary is both a time to celebrate progress and recognize the work that remains.

"This is an important historical landmark, but it's also a call to action because we have so much more work left to do," Gadkar-Wilcox said.

She pointed to recent pay transparency laws aimed at addressing the wage gap between men and women.

Gadkar-Wilcox said the best way to observe Women's Equality Day is by supporting ongoing efforts focused on issues such as economic equity and access to health care.
