A Centereach woman previously convicted of attempting to kill her newborn in September 2017 has been deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Soili Xiomara Aparicio-Santos was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2018 following her conviction.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, an immigration detainer was first lodged against Aparicio-Santos in 2017 after she was arrested by the Suffolk County Police Department.

Authorities say at 33-years-old she gave birth to a baby boy inside her home and attempted to smother the newborn with a pillow minutes later. A family member who saw what was happening called 911, and the child was later placed into foster care.

Despite her original 16-year sentence, Aparicio-Santos appealed and had her prison term reduced to 10 years, DHS officials say.

Local authorities notified ICE ahead of her release and a second immigration detainer was filed in December 2018 while she was still incarcerated.

ICE officials arrested Aparicio-Santos on April 7. She was deported on April 15.

DHS says Aparicio-Santos is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras who illegally entered the United States in 2014.

That same year, she was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge.
