Passaic County prosecutors said Jesus Mora Cruz broke into the victim's home in March and sexually assaulted her while she was asleep.
Police said Cruz held a knife to her neck before stealing items from inside the house.
The woman was treated for stab wounds.
Cruz faces attempted murder and multiple assault charges.
