The Whitehouse Station Rescue Squad has added sensory bags to each of its ambulances to help patients with autism or other sensory and communication needs.

The bags include noise-canceling headphones, fidget toys, sunglasses, a whiteboard and communication cards for nonverbal communication.

Harrison Laverty, the rescue squad's deputy chief of EMS, said the goal is to ensure crews are prepared to help anyone in need.

"We're trying to bridge that gap in our patient care. You know, we can have all the expensive equipment in the world. But sometimes the more human element of communicating with somebody is lost," Laverty said.

Each squad member has been taught how to use the items while ensuring they do not contribute to overstimulation.
