It's best to be prepared before a crisis happens, which is why Westport Human Services launched a new tool to support residents who are considered vulnerable.
Westport Human Services, along with the Westport police and fire departments, created "Westport READY."
The new system replaces and merges two former registries:
- Westport Emergency Registry – formerly used by Human Services to check on seniors living alone with medical needs during storms or other emergencies.
- Voluntary Registry for People with Disabilities – previously managed with the police department to aid first responders in understanding unique needs during 911 calls.
"One of the things that we have noticed over the years is a need for more collaboration and understanding of what individual households might need in the state of an emergency," said Elaine Daignault, director of Human Services for the Town of Westport.
By merging the two registries, Daignault said it would be easier for the agencies to use one system to identify people's needs.
"That way, when the police or fire or EMS go out to the home, they actually have it flagged in their systems and they know what they're walking into," she said.
In a town of 28,000, Fire Chief Nick Marsan said having additional information while responding to a call would equip his department better.
"We're kind of forearmed going in. If there's someone with some special needs or maybe hearing impaired; if we know those things prior to going, then we could adjust our tactics and strategies to make sure that we are doing what we can to really provide the best possible outcome," Marsan said.
Daignault emphasized that Westport Ready is not a rescue list, but rather a support tool. She encourages residents to have their own emergency plan and supplies, as well as a list of emergency contacts.
