A new initiative aims to tackle the growing opioid crisis across the Bronx.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson says the borough has seen the highest rate of opioid-related fatalities. A new investment aims to expand the resources she says will help make a change.

"The drug treatment programs, the harm reduction programs, the wraparound services for clients that are living with substance abuse and or drug addiction," said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.

The new initiative will focus on expanding support services, improving access to treatment and reinvesting money into the most impacted neighborhoods including the hub.

"We have to do more to save our constituents and give them a real hope and a successful future," said Gibson.

Last month, elected Bronx officials did a walkthrough of the area.

News 12 crews witnessed a person overdosing.

"For so long, the hub has just seen so much devastation. This initiative is actually to invest real dollars, $600,000 from storefront enhancements to public safety measures to cameras to lighting. So really revitalizing the area, supporting the small business corridor, one of our busiest and largest," said Gibson.
