Warren Township is the latest location in New Jersey to push back against the construction of data centers.

The Warren Township Committee voted to ban centers from operating locally during their meeting on Thursday night.

Critics of the facilities argue that they strain the energy grid, water supply, negatively impact air quality and create noise pollution.

"Warren Township's decision to prohibit data centers is about protecting our residents,” said Committeeman Daniel Croson, who introduced the ordinance.

“We’re proud of this ban, but we also recognize that no single town can solve these issues alone. New Jersey should enact a statewide moratorium on new large-scale data center development until we have real protections in place for the people who live here,” he said.

Asbury Park, Andover and Red Bank have also pursued similar bans.

A Stockton University poll released last month found that more than half of New Jersey residents support banning new centers from being built in their communities.

There are still nearly 100 data centers throughout the state.
