Officials are urging residents to take precautions as a bitter blast of cold air has settled this week over Long Island.
Caroline Lerczak, of the Long Island Homeless Coalition, says bitter blasts like this one put unsheltered residents at risk.
In Nassau County, a temporary warming space will be activated when the wind chill reaches 32 degrees or below for two consecutive hours or more. The site is located at the former Nassau County Family Court building at 1200 Old Country Rd. in Westbury. The space is open 24/7 once activated.
In Suffolk County, some towns have announced limited warming center hours, while others had not finalized plans as of Monday night.
Anyone who sees someone who may need shelter overnight is urged to call the Nassau County Winter Homeless Hotline at 1-866-WARMBED (1-866-927-6233).
