Construction is underway at the Waller-Maple parking lot in White Plains, where some business owners say they would have liked more notice about the closure as the city moves forward with a long-planned improvement project.
The city closed the lot on Monday to begin a rehabilitation project that includes below-grade work, new retaining walls, sidewalks, pedestrian walkways, lighting, landscaping and resurfacing.
Officials say the improvements are aimed at making the lot safer, more accessible and more attractive.
During construction, drivers are being directed to nearby municipal parking facilities, including the Lyon Place Garage, which offers more than 600 spaces.
Some business owners say the timing of the closure is difficult, particularly with the busy holiday shopping season approaching.
"It's always full on weekends, especially, but also at dinner time," said Andy Kimerling, owner of Westchester Road Runner.
Kimerling said he is concerned about the impact of losing parking and believes business owners should have been more involved in the planning process.
He also said many merchants were unaware of prior public discussions surrounding the project and only learned of the closure days before work began.
Other business owners declined to speak on camera but told News 12 they would have liked more communication from the city. However, several said their primary focus now is ensuring the project is completed as quickly as possible.
Some who live in the area seemed indifferent about the work being done, while others were excited to see the project come to fruition.
White Plains resident Jonathan Mincer said he understands the need for improvements and hopes the work is finished promptly.
City officials say construction could take up to six months, depending on weather conditions. If winter weather prevents work from continuing, the lot may temporarily reopen until construction resumes in the spring.
Businesses and residences connected to the lot will remain open throughout the project, and pedestrian access will be maintained.
For drivers seeking alternatives, the city says several municipal garages and surface lots within walking distance of the Waller-Maple lot offer thousands of additional parking spaces during the closure.
Those include the Lyon Place Garage, City Center Garage, and more.
