Emergency officials have issued a voluntary evacuation notice as the shore braces for a slow-moving nor’easter expected to bring heavy rain and tidal flooding to the coast.

The notice applies to residents in Manasquan’s Tier 1 area, which includes areas between First and Fourth avenues, Timber Lane, Beach Front, Brielle Road and Long Avenue.

Officials said areas east of Jackson Avenue, the beachfront and locations within two blocks of Glimmer Glass and Watsons Creek could also be affected.

“A voluntary evacuation for Tier 1 is recommended for residents in non-elevated structures located in low-lying flood-prone areas, particularly the elderly and special needs persons,” the borough said. “This is a dynamic storm, and flood levels may exceed the levels listed above and may extend well into Sunday.”

Borough officials said tides are forecast to run about 4 feet above normal and could cause major coastal flooding.

“If you live in or near these areas, please take the necessary actions to secure outdoor property, and move vehicles to higher ground before the high tides begin,” the borough said. “It is recommended that residents in non-elevated structures located in low-lying flood-prone areas, particularly the elderly and special needs persons, shut off the electrical main in their home and move themselves, vehicles and pets to higher ground until the flooding subsides.”

The borough said a coastal flood warning typically means major coastal flooding is expected within 12 hours.

The voluntary evacuation notice was posted at about 10:15 a.m. Officials said they plan to provide an update at 4 p.m. Friday.

Residents are urged to avoid driving on flooded streets and not go around barricades.
