Voters will head to the polls in less than two weeks, and one organization is working to make sure more of those voters are representing the LGBTQ community.
"Vogue the Vote" in Newark is the first event series of its kind in New Jersey. It's a Newark Pride program geared toward educating LGBTQ voters between the ages of 17 and 34.
Campaign chair Alonzo S. Blaylock told News 12, "Its beyond just a campaign about voting in the presidential election. This is about creating a space and a platform for people who feel like their voices aren't heard."
He came up with this as a way to reach the ballroom community, which consists of different houses primarily ran by nonbinary and trans women of color for young creatives. "They would also have dance battles that we know as vogueing," he said.
Blaylock said, "Most of those kids are from disenfranchised spaces that require a lot of care."
He added that members often feel silenced when it comes to politics or misinformed. So, Vogue the Vote is offering Pride events that educate with principles on why to vote, housing and specific policies that affect the LGBTQ population.
They've already had several events throughout the month of October, and they will begin offering workshops in January in preparation for state elections and midterms. Blaylock said, "This is open to everyone. If you're an ally, if you're a friend of ours, please come help us build this moment and this movement."
Vogue the Vote is also planning a watch party on Election Day. More information can be found at The Derek Doll and Newark Pride.
