The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a disaster declaration for Long Island’s shellfish industry following a winter marked by prolonged freezing temperatures.
According to a survey conducted with industry partners, oyster farmers are facing production losses exceeding 30%. In addition, critical infrastructure - including racks, lines, and vessels - sustained significant damage, with repair and replacement costs estimated at $2.4 million.
The combination of sustained cold, heavy snowfall, and thick ice made it nearly impossible for farmers to access their growing areas, halting routine harvesting and day-to-day operations.
“The damage our shellfish growers saw this winter was unprecedented, with severe losses costing them millions of dollars,” said New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball.
As a result of the disaster declaration, shellfish growers in Nassau and Suffolk counties are now eligible to
apply for low-interest emergency loans.
Farmers have eight months from the declaration date of May 26, to submit applications for financial assistance.
Gov. Kathy Hochul requested the disaster declaration on April 6 for aquaculture producers following a freezing February.
