A project to build a new public plaza at the Broadway Junction Subway Station is moving forward.
The New York Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has begun taking bids to build a new public plaza at the station.
It's part of a $500 million project to improve pedestrian safety, add new businesses and housing and more green space.
Broadway Junction is the third busiest train station in Brooklyn, according to the NYCEDC.
"Broadway Junction and East New York in general is a place that has not been invested in, in a way it really needed to be," said Council member Sandy Nurse, who represents the district the station lies in.
While most riders said they welcome the upgrades, the development has brought concerns for others.
"We understand that with investment comes real estate opportunity further real estate private investment and the ability to push people out," said Boris Santos, with the East New York Community Land Trust.
Santos said he would like to see safeguards put in place to protect families who already live in the area.
"This community of East New York, Ocean Hill, Brownsville and Eastern Bushwick is one of the few predominantly Black and brown communities that exists in all of Brooklyn," said Santos. "We have to make sure that our folks stay put where they are at."
Council member Nurse said keeping residents in their homes is a priority as upgrades are made to the station.
