A pool party at the New Milford Swim Club was shut down by police after reports of fights and other disorderly conduct, according to borough officials.

Mayor Michael Putrino said the event, advertised as the "Lavish Effect Pool Party," was held Aug. 30 without authorization from the borough.He said the swim club also did not notify borough officials or the New Milford Police Department that the event was taking place.

Putrino said police intervened and shut down the party after reported physical altercations and other disorderly, illegal and inappropriate conduct among attendees. The mayor's statement did not provide details about any arrests, injuries or specific alleged offenses.

The New Milford Swim Club is privately operated but has leased borough-owned property since 1959. Putrino said the club has struggled financially in recent years and that the borough has made changes to its lease and provided other assistance to help reduce its operating costs.

The mayor also said the borough has become increasingly concerned about repeated violations of the club's lease.

"The decision to hold an unauthorized event of this nature on Borough property was extremely poor, completely unacceptable, and very disappointing," Putrino said.

The borough's governing body, attorney, risk manager and police department are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the event and will determine what action to take, according to the mayor.

Putrino said officials recognize the swim club's value to residents but must ensure borough property is used safely and in accordance with its agreements and applicable regulations.
