Parking can be a pain in New York City - not just with cars but with bikes too.

“I hang it in my apartment, and yeah, if I'm out, just anywhere that I can find a spot. And there's not always great spots," said biker Katie Malanati.

It's why the New York City Department of Transportation says it plans on having 500 secure bike parking locations across the city next year. City officials say some units will be able to fit six bikes while others could be walk-in and fit up to 80 bikes.

“I think the more bike-friendly that this city can become, the better," Malanati said.

City officials say there will likely be long-term and short-term parking options. They're asking New Yorkers for feedback on things like location, types of bikes to store, amenities and more. But some people have a different type of feedback.

“It’s just going to take a lot of space of a lot of parking space for people to park. You know, and I think it's the wrong thing. You know, I think that shouldn't do it," said Edwin Valentin.

City officials estimate that about .02% of the city's parking will be repurposed for the initiative. Bikers like Will Jackson say it's a small tradeoff to keep the city rolling.

“It's New York. You can find somewhere to park. And plus...more accessibility near the park, I think, is better for bikers," Jackson said.
