Rabies alerts were issued in two New Jersey counties after raccoons tested positive following separate encounters with dogs in Linden and Mount Holly.
Linden police say a dog killed a raccoon near Fay and Elizabeth Avenues, and the animal later tested positive for rabies. It is the second raccoon in the area to test positive this year.
In Burlington County, officials say a wild raccoon tested positive after getting into a fight with a dog last week on Blue Jay Lane in Mount Holly. The dog was vaccinated, and no humans or other pets were exposed.
Health officials in both counties are reminding pet owners to keep vaccinations up to date, avoid contact with wild animals, report sick wildlife and secure trash.
