Wait times at Newark Liberty International Airport security checkpoints have fluctuated between 10 and 25 minutes, which is normal for a Monday.
This is a lot different from lines that are 2 and a half to 3 hours long in Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston and Phoenix, where there were mass callouts by agents with the Transportation Security Administration, leading to missed flights.
Those waiting in line on Monday may have noticed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents strolling by, as ordered by President Donald Trump in reaction to callouts.
It provoked Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) to show up at the airport. The senator sent a message to President Trump to fund TSA and get ICE out of the airports.
"The frustration Americans are feeling today grows. It grows because they come to the airports and they see ICE agents who have no training or specified skills to do the jobs of the TSA, who are now about to go without their second paycheck," said Booker
TSA is going unfunded as Democrats and Republicans in Congress fight over funding for ICE and immigration reform.
Acting Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Lauren Bis sent out a statement saying, "This pointless, reckless shutdown of our Homeland Security workforce has caused more than 400 TSA officers to quit and thousands to call out from work because they are not able to afford gas, childcare, food or rent.”
