This week there have been multiple coyote sightings reported right here on Long Island. Yeah, the town of Oyster Bay says that there were sightings just this week in Laddingtown and other North Shore communities. Joining us now for more insight is coyote and dog expert Frank Vicente. Frank, good to see you. Good morning. I think it was probably 6 or 7 years ago when we spoke about sightings in Searring Town. So this isn't new, but just how prevalent is this coyote population? Yes, good morning. Thanks for having me, uh, big fans of both of you. uh, yeah, I mean, uh, you're right, this really isn't, uh, new news, uh, you know, it's important that people be aware and they're all for that my organization and my colleagues from the Long Island Coyote Study Group do outreach and try to educate the public and you know, we want to reassure people that we're here for them, uh, if they have any concerns, uh. But yeah, I mean, the, the town of Oyster Bay is significant in the fact that it has a lot of green space, uh, and, uh, the coyotes that are showing up there and they have been, as you've reported, uh, uh, not too long ago in Laddingtown, uh, it's most likely the same individuals, uh, you know, uh, animals are doing well, uh, further west in the town of North Hempstead, their offspring perhaps have dispersed into Oyster Bay. Or it may be uh new ones coming over from the Bronx into Queens and they make their way avoiding the town of North Hempstead animals and uh moving out into Oyster Bay, but the population's been very stable and has not Necessarily increased all that dramatically. In fact, we've lost a few of them due to cars. We've had as many as 5 animals uh hit by cars, so the, the population has dropped. Uh, certainly, uh, with, uh, coming out of the breeding season, uh, and, uh, pups may be born, uh, in late March, uh, the population might go up a little bit again, but, uh, we won't know until the spring. So. Thank you so much for for coming on with us and explaining a little more about that, uh, called the, the coyote whisper. That's right pleasure.
