Getting home from New York Penn Station could look very different during the World Cup.
Transit officials say NJ TRANSIT service from Penn Station to New Jersey will be restricted beginning four hours before kickoff and continuing for three hours after each match at MetLife Stadium.
Service into New York is expected to continue operating normally.
Officials estimate about 40,000 fans will use NJ TRANSIT for each match, making Penn Station one of the busiest hubs during the tournament.
As a result, commuters may need to adjust their usual routes.
PATH trains will serve as a primary alternative, with increased service before and after games to handle demand.
Other options may include ferries and additional bus service from the Port Authority.
For many riders, the commute home could involve extra transfers and longer travel times.
One major test will come June 22, when an 8 p.m. match overlaps with the evening rush.
Under the plan, World Cup operations begin at 4 p.m., right as commuters typically start heading home.
Officials say commuters should plan ahead and expect changes to their usual routines during match days.
