Tire flies off car, smashes into another vehicle and injures driver
A driver was seriously injured when a tire flew off another vehicle and crashed into her windshield on Route 1 in South Brunswick.
The incident occurred Sunday at about 7:15 p.m., according to Police Chief Jim Ryan. The 59-year-old Teaneck woman was heading southbound on Route 1 between Beekman Road and Sand Hills Road when a rear tire came off another car that was heading northbound at the same time. The tire bounced over the divider and smashed into the woman’s windshield, the chief said.
The woman became trapped inside the vehicle after it was struck by the tire. First responders extricated her from the vehicle and transported her to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle that lost the tire, a 19-year-old from East Windsor, was not injured.
Police said the roadway was shut down for a short time immediately after the crash, then reduced to one lane through the remainder of the evening commute.
