Norwalk firefighters responded to a reported structure fire along 187 Ely Avenue at 4:22 p.m. Saturday evening.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the two and a half story house engulfed in heavy flames and smoke along the side and rear of the structure with smoke pouring out from all floors.
The magnitude of the fire trigged a third alarm and additional resources were brought to aid Norwalk firefighters, Norwalk fire officials say.
Engine 5 firefighters battled the main body of the fire, which was located at the rear of the building.
Fire officials said crews encountered issues with the initial hydrant supplying Engine 5, prompting Engine 4 to secure a secondary hydrant and provide additional water to support the fire attack.
Norwalk fire officials say the scale of the fire caused Norwalk police to close down the street allow for proper handling of the flames.
A fourteen-year-old resident escaped by jumping from a second floor window and was transported to area hospital for evaluation and treatment, officials said, with their mother being assisted out of the building by a neighbors ladder ahead of fire officials arrival.
Firefighters rescued a trapped dog within the first floor of the residency with a second dog escaping the fire with occupants prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
Thirteen residents were displaced with the American Red Cross aiding the residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshal's Office.
