A major expansion of free Pre-K is bringing new classroom seats to communities across the Hudson Valley as the new school year gets underway.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that new free Pre-K seats are coming to more than 400 school districts across New York state, including Yonkers and more than 50 districts in the Hudson Valley.

The expansion will add tens of thousands of Pre-K spots for children statewide, according to the governor.

New seats are being added in districts including White Plains, Mount Vernon and East Ramapo.

The Dobbs Ferry School District will receive free Pre-K seats for the first time.

Hochul said the multi-year effort is part of her plan to lower costs for families and put New York on a path toward universal Pre-K.

The governor said the state plans to make free Pre-K available to all 4-year-olds by the start of the 2028-29 school year.

The move would eliminate the lottery system currently used by many school districts.

New York City already offers a universal Pre-K program.

Hochul secured a $563 million annual funding increase for the current school year to support the expansion.
