Shock, confusion, and a feeling of betrayal from parents in Williamsburg tonight after learning that a childcare center that's been around for generations is being forced to shut down. News Twelve's Greg Thompson has the story. For 50 years, Nestros Ninos has been where generations of families in Williamsburg have sent their kids. This is a foundation. This is where it all begins. So when registration for next year's pre and 3K classes went live this week, they were a little confused. We have parents coming in asking new site. It's not on the on the my school application, and we're wondering why. It was only after. made calls to elected officials that they found out Nestros Ninos was one of 4 childcare centers in western central Brooklyn where the Department of Education was not renewing its building lease, leaving over 90 staffers and 250 children without a school. Literally like they say, like pulling the rug from under your feet like you just don't know where you're going to land. The decision is apparently the result of the mayor's preliminary budget. And a source tells us that the buildings being closed had low enrollment, so the city is choosing instead to use the money to pump up other nearby programs in buildings with longer lease deals. We have this high quality, but when it comes to for you to pay pennies for a renewal or a lease, we're not good enough. It's insulting. The DOE tells us they'll work one on one with every family to help them find a new school nearby, but members of Williamsburg's Hispanic and immigrant community say. There's no replacing what Nestras Ninos has meant to them and their families. Our community matters not only to ourselves but to our families, and we're trying to raise our children in a community that raised us and give back to those communities, and we will fight to keep our schools. And we're told it'll start where so many other things have started over the years right here at Nestros Ninos with a rally next Friday morning in Williamsburg. Greg Thompson, News 12, Brooklyn.

The New York City schools chancellor confirms that she is in talks with the early childhood centers that are slated to close down this summer. Those discussions happening minutes before those educational centers took to the steps of City Hall today to protest. News's Nadia Galindo is at City Hall with the latest details. Nadia. And Amanda, it was a quick turn of events and people here at this protest questioning why it took the mayor and the chancellor about 3 weeks to finally come to the table and have those discussions. Now while it's not clear what will come out of those talks, it was made clear what these protesters would like to see happen. One more, not one. Yeah, they want to stay open. Those centers, as we reported, 4 early childcare centers in Brooklyn are expected to close this June. They include Nuestros Ninos, Grand Street Settlements, Friends of Crown Heights, and Fort Greene Council. These centers say they were blindsided a week before the portal for 3K registration was set to open, learning their centers would not be opening next year. They were told it was due to low enrollments, but each center says they are at capacity or close to capacity. And because of their leases that were coming up now as this protest was underway, I had a chance to sit down with New York City Chancellor Melissa Aviles Ramos, who says she's in talks with those centers for a pathway forward. You're going to hear from her right now and from Brooklyn borough president Antonio Reynoso. Very excited um about the potential uh for a pathway forward that's going to be great for everyone. They inextricably know every single detail about these sensors they could tell us over the phone we know exactly how it all works we're opening them all up and they didn't say that so that worries me. And another thing that worries borough president Antonio Reynoso is that the portal to register for those 3K programs is still closed for these centers. They worry that if it is finally opened, they'll see low enrollment numbers because of what's happened here. Reporting from City Hall, I'm Nadia Galindo, News 12, Brooklyn.
