Teaneck man charged with child abuse, aggravated assault after juvenile attacked
A 64-year-old Teaneck man is behind bars after a law enforcement investigation revealed he physically assaulted and endangered a child.
The suspect, identified as Miguel Mejia, was arrested Tuesday. He faces charges including second-degree aggravated assault, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, fourth-degree child abuse and fourth-degree refusal to submit to DNA collection.
The case began Tuesday when Teaneck police contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office regarding the physical assault of a juvenile.
A joint investigation by county detectives determined Mejia had assaulted and endangered the minor within the township. Details regarding the victim’s relationship to Mejia or the severity of any injuries have not been released to protect the identity of the juvenile.
Authorities said that after Mejia was taken into custody by detectives, he refused to provide a mandated DNA sample, resulting in an additional criminal charge under New Jersey law.
