It's your money, and you (probably) don't even know it!
The New York State Comptroller's Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF) says, on average, it returns over $2 million in lost money every day.
The Comptroller's Office says unclaimed funds "occur when people are separated from their money and can come from utility deposits, trust funds, old bank accounts, uncashed checks or unused gift cards."
Millions of dollars that rightfully belong to Long Islanders are unclaimed right now.
In Nassau County, the State Comptroller's Office says there are 2,419,249 accounts valued at a combined $616,521,758. In Suffolk County, 2,494,074 accounts featuring unclaimed property have a combined value of $478,647,426.
OUF will have representatives attending community events on Long Island to help residents find out if they have unclaimed money. OUF will be at The Oyster Fest at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park on Oct. 18-19 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Lindenhurst Memorial Library will host OUF officials on Oct. 22 from 1-2 p.m.
