New York City taxi drivers are raising concerns about safety regulations.

The New York Federation of Taxi drivers is urging the Taxi & Limousine Commission to update policies it says are outdated.

The policy currently says drivers are not allowed to lock rear passenger doors without permission, which it argues, puts both them and their passengers at risk.

The push for change comes after a livery cab passenger was killed in Brooklyn.

Advocates say allowing drivers to lock their doors once a passenger is inside could help prevent similar tragedies.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers has submitted a letter to the TLC requesting revisions to the current rules.

Under existing policies, drivers who lock their rear doors without permission face fines and potential suspension.
