The smell of pine needles fills the air inside Barbara White’s home as she decorates another of her fresh balsam wreaths for her shop, White’s Whimsy Wreaths.
"My adrenaline starts pumping because I have so many ideas," she said. "Once I start doing the different ones, I just get extremely creative and eager to make the next one and see what I do different."
White is primarily known throughout the region for her
customized artificial wreaths and centerpieces, but the shop all started with her fresh balsam wreaths. Decorating them has been a family tradition two decades in the making, starting when her sons were in Boy Scouts.
"We did one type [of wreath], and we sold at least a thousand of them," White said. "The needles fall off a lot easier [than the artificial ones]. They're messier, but actually, they're more fun to work with, because once I start making them, I have a million different ideas going through my head on how to decorate them."
As the years go by, that tradition continues on with the holiday season truly being the most wonderful time of the year for both White and her customers.
" I love doing it," she said. " I've had the same customers for years, so that should speak for itself. I can't tell you how many repeat buyers I have... I have a customer whose wreaths stay [fresh] until summer. She keeps them in the house, and she always sends me an email over the summer saying her wreath is still green and looking good. "
