A man was rescued while swimming in the waters on the East End late Monday afternoon.
The swimmer in distress was first spotted around 4 p.m. by Paulie Muia Jr., a local fisherman, who subsequently called 911.
Muia Jr. tells News 12 he saw the individual struggling near the tip of Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays, on the ocean side, after being dragged out by the rip current.
Fortunately, the incoming tide helped the man get sucked back through the inlet towards the bay, Muia Jr. says.
Southampton Town Police Marine Patrol and the Coast Guard responded to the area and helped the swimmer back to shore safely, along with the assistance from nearby boaters.
News 12 has reached out to Southampton police and the Coast Guard for more information about the incident and are waiting to hear back.
