A Uniondale man accused of violently robbing a Shop Rite Friday afternoon in Bethpage is facing numerous criminal charges.
Authorities say Steve Muir, 26, entered the store on Hempstead Turnpike and attempted to leave with a soda bottle tucked into his waistband.
When confronted by two employees, he charged them and sprayed an unknown substance in their direction.
The workers began to suffer severe burning and itching to their throat and eyes, according to police.
Authorities say officers arrived at the scene and apprehended Muir. They also found a knife in his possession during the arrest.
Police say he has a history of stealing and exhibiting violent behavior at the same store.
The two injured employees were treated by medics at the scene.
The charges against Muir include multiple counts of robbery, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
He is expected to be arraigned Saturday in Hempstead.
