A dog was abandoned and left tied to a public garbage bin in Montclair’s South End Business District last week.

According to the Montclair Police Department, officers responded to Orange Road on Oct. 13 after a caller reported that a man had left a dog tied up and walked away.

Surveillance footage from the area shows a man exiting a vehicle — possibly a Dodge Durango — with the dog before the vehicle traveled south on Orange Road. The footage shows a man tying the dog to a garbage bin around 8:45 p.m.

Investigators say the suspect then walked into a nearby store at 8:46 p.m. and exited three minutes later, fleeing north on foot along Orange Road at 8:49 p.m. without the animal.

The suspect is described as a man wearing a black sweatshirt with pink writing, jeans, black shoes with pink laces and a light-colored baseball cap.

The dog is described as black with a white underbelly. Animal control officers responded to the scene and took custody of the dog.
