NJ Transit can now be sued in other states after a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Galette v. New Jersey Transit Corporation.

The case stemmed from two separate incidents in which people were injured in bus crashes in Manhattan and Philadelphia.

In both cases the injured parties sued for negligence; NJ Transit argued it could not be sued because they are a state entity.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court wrote "NJ Transit is not an arm of New Jersey and thus is not entitled to share in New Jersey’s interstate sovereign immunity."

NJ Transit said in a statement: “We have received the Court’s decision and are reviewing the opinion to assess its implications, and will evaluate our next steps. We respect the Court’s ruling and will take appropriate actions in accordance with the opinion.”
