Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney says law enforcement had to communicate with the public very carefully prior to the arrest of Rex Heuermann.
The district attorney says authorities were getting closer and closer over the past 18 months to making a break in the Gilgo investigation, but they could not let the suspect know that.
"I wanted him to be safe in the belief that we were not making progress," Tierney says.

He says as progress continued to be made, investigators feared that details about the investigation could leak.
"We want to execute search warrants, and we want to get even more evidence," Tierney says. "And if this becomes public, all of that goes up in smoke."
