Human remains have been found inside a submerged vehicle off Cedar Beach boat ramp on Long Island’s North Shore, according to authorities and a nonprofit dive team that made the discovery.
Bill McIntosh, with the group Exploring with a Mission, was scanning local waterways for missing persons in vehicles when sonar picked up a PT Cruiser about 55 yards from shore.
The vehicle was found approximately 19 feet below the surface around 5 p.m. Monday evening.
“We went out about 55 yards and picked up the vehicle on sonar,” said McIntosh.
Two divers from the team entered the water and discovered what they believe to be a human bone.
Suffolk County police confirmed that remains were recovered from the car, triggering a large emergency response at the typically quiet waterfront.
“One police car, two, three, seven — it just kept increasing,” recalled a witness.
Another local resident expressed disbelief.
“You watch it on television, and you never think it’s in your own neighborhood," they said.
On Tuesday afternoon, the PT Cruiser was removed from the water, as members of the community watched.
As News 12 previously reported, 62-year-old Robert Long, of Miller Place, went missing in December 2010.
He was last seen driving a PT Cruiser.
While police have not officially identified the remains, they acknowledged a possible connection.
“There is a missing person we suspect,” said Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer. “We made a courtesy notification to the family but have not made a positive identification.”
Members of Long’s family were seen at the scene of the recovery. McIntosh said his team’s mission is to bring peace to families dealing with unresolved disappearances.
“Bringing them closure, a sense of relief they were able to be brought home,” McIntosh said.
