Students participated in the Steel Pan Festival at Brooklyn College on Wednesday.
The festival celebrates Caribbean Heritage Month. The steel pan, also known as the steel drum, originated In Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s.
“Second year of a steel pan festival and have the students in there expressing their voice, expressing their culture and, and being seen as amazing,” says Paul Thompson, the Executive Director of the New York City Arts Office. “They're waving flags. They're repping the countries that they're from. The whole diaspora is really represented. It's amazing.
In addition to the performance, there were also art workshops and community panels.
