A multifamily home in Stratford caught fire this morning around 9 on Park Street.
When firefighters arrived they say there were flames on the first floor which quickly spread to the second floor and attic.
The first floor was unoccupied but firefighters had to assist one occupant from the second floor outside.
The resident informed officials that his pet gerbil and cat were still in his apartment.
Firefighters were able to rescue the animals and reunite them with their owner.
Officials say the Red Cross is assisting four adults and one child who have been displaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters say it seems to be accidental.
