What started as a Friday night of country music turned into a waiting game for hundreds of Cole Swindell fans at Eisenhower Park.

Fans began lining up as early as 1 p.m. for the free concert, but severe weather repeatedly delayed the start time — first from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., then to 6 p.m.

Around 6:30 p.m., as strong winds picked up and heavy rain moved in, Nassau County police urged concertgoers to take cover in their vehicles.

Fans scrambled for shelter, but many came prepared with umbrellas, ponchos and even garbage bags to protect themselves from the downpour.

For Chris Petrella of Hicksville, the concert carried a special meaning. He attended in memory of his younger brother, who died two years ago and had joined him at his last concert on Long Island.

Despite the weather, some fans refused to give up their spots.

The rain eventually cleared, and Swindell took the stage around 9 p.m., turning a night that began with delays, wind and downpours into a concert that fans won’t soon forget.
