STORM WATCH: Passing snow squalls and rain showers to impact morning commute

Give yourself extra time Thursday morning for likely delays. Strong winds will wreak havoc across the state.

A storm strengthening up in Canada will bring some occasional snow/rain showers to New Jersey. Most, if not all, the precipitation that occurs happens through the overnight hours when the majority of us will still be fast asleep. The snow showers will occur in brief on-and-off bursts of snow for a few hours. It’s possible when you wake up on Thursday morning there could be a dusting to maybe, worst case scenario, 1-2 inches in accumulation. Enough for me to ask that you give extra time in the morning routine to clean off your car properly.
While snow is the sensational headline, the wind is the biggest weather issue we have to deal with throughout the day and into the night on Thursday. A consistent 15-25 mph wind with frequent gusts from 35 to 45 mph and possibly higher along the coast. This type of wind will wreck holiday decorations, bring down old/dead branches and possibly topple weaker trees, bringing down power lines. Plan for possible outages.
The secondary byproduct of the wind will be another bout of below-average temperatures for the end of the week into the weekend. It’s the beginning of December, and this kind of cold can be expected. It’s not record-breaking, but it will be below the average for this time of year.
Eventually, because the weather is cyclical, milder air will move back in. Early next week temperatures are expected to climb back into the 50s.
