The severe weather that is possible tonight hinges on cloud cover.
Most of the area is socked in with overcast skies. This keeps the atmosphere fairly stable, not allowing for storms to become stronger than they already are.
If a neighborhood were to see the clouds clearing, then temperatures could warm much faster, allowing air to rise quickly, creating a more volatile environment. Nastier weather feeds off that.
As it stands right now, the best opportunity for nasty storms would be 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. tonight.
Damaging winds would be the primary threat. However, there is still a chance for a brief tornado to spin up. Please be extra aware of your surroundings and take any and all warnings seriously.
