We continue to track this Nor'easter for our Sunday and into Monday. This forecast remains on track. Scattered showers, wind, and waves begin to pick up Saturday night. This continues to intensify into the peak of the event, which looks to be Sunday pm-Monday am. Main concerns right now are strong to damaging gusts between 30-50 mph, more along the coast and even stronger on the water. Heavy, potentially torrential downpours will bring between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain to fall between Sunday am- Monday pm, and major coastal impacts including moderate to major coastal flooding and erosion of beaches.
High tides times for the Bronx (Throgs Neck) on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., and around 5:20 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. Monday. For Brooklyn (Coney Island) high tide times will be around 12:20 p.m. on Sunday and 1:20 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. on Monday. Tides are already higher than usual due to the recent full moon and the distance of the moon right now, but wind and pressure from this storm will worsen these. Communities along the water should be prepared for widespread coastal flooding.
There is a low-medium risk of flash flooding from the rain. Blocked storm drains from fallen leaves could lead to flooding in neighborhoods. Areas that tend to flood during even a slight rain should be on high alert through the beginning of next week.
One of the concerns of this storm is that it is a continuous and repeated battering of rain, wind, and coastal concerns throughout all day Sunday and into Monday. This will be problematic for trees and power lines and could potentially lead to downed trees/limbs that could cause power outages.
The weather for today is mostly okay, with wind and waves building during the later portions of the day. There could be a stray shower, but it will be a good final day to preparation for this storm. Make a plan for what to do if your neighborhood floods, have devices and extra power banks charged up and ready to go if you lose power, and prep your outdoor furniture/decor for the storm. If you haven't put any decor up, wait until next week. If you do have any up, make sure it's secured or bring it inside for this storm.
