Steady snow continues to fall across Orange County as the region remains under a winter storm warning, with officials warning that conditions are expected to worsen as the storm moves through the area.
In Woodbury and Cornwall, snow has been falling consistently for hours, coating roadways and reducing visibility. Video from Route 32 and Main Street in Cornwall shows snow-covered pavement and light traffic, as many residents appear to be staying off the roads.
“I’ve been driving around in the storm for a few hours, and the roads are pretty bad,” one driver told News 12. “I’m headed home.”
Woodbury police say the town is under a state of emergency from 6 a.m. Sunday until noon Monday. Officials say patrols are out monitoring road conditions and pushing updates through social media, adding that people have largely been following guidance to stay home. Police also said they expect conditions to worsen as more snow falls.
The storm is already having an impact on local businesses. In Woodbury, a deli clerk told News 12 they decided to close early after seeing little foot traffic throughout the day.
“No one’s really been in,” the clerk said. “We’re closing early.”
In Cornwall, town officials say most residents have moved parked cars off town roads and are staying home, which has helped crews continue plowing and treating roadways.
Several school districts are also adjusting schedules because of the storm. Cornwall Central School District and Monroe-Woodbury Central School District have both announced that school will be closed for students on Monday.
Woodbury police say warming centers are available for residents if needed at the town’s senior center and community center as the storm continues.
Orange County officials say the Emergency Operations Center remains activated and that they will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as the storm progresses.
Residents are reminded to call 911 for emergencies and 311 for non-emergency storm-related needs, including shelter information.
