The Connecticut Department of Education has instructed school districts to follow a list of procedures in anticipation of ICE agents showing up on campuses.
The move comes as the Trump immigration crackdown expands to encompass traditionally protected areas such as schools, hospitals and churches, which have long been excluded from the reach of immigration enforcement.
"We welcome these procedures because they reflect an exhaustive effort by the state to find a practical balance between protecting our kids and ensuring we do not defy federal authority, which would only invite more trouble," said Mayor Joe Ganim Tuesday night.
Among a long list of other procedures to follow, the guidelines instruct schools "to request and record the immigration agent's identification, ask if they have a judicial warrant to support their request and maintain a calm & cooperative manner to avoid escalating the situation."
