State lawmakers said Wednesday they want to residents to receive bigger rebate checks this fall.

While Gov. Ned Lamont has proposed giving all taxpayers $200, top Democrats say they want those checks to be up to $500. "I think you could take the existing pot of money that goes to that credit and make it a check for this year. And that's not any new money required for that," said Connecticut House Speaker Matt Ritter (D-Hartford). Republicans are against the idea. "It's disappointing to see them continue to spend money out of that volatility fund on half-baked, one-time gimmicks for residents in the state of Connecticut that might get Democrats re-elected in November," said Connecticut House Minority Leader Vin. Candelora (R-Branford). Lawmakers plan to unveil more specific details next week.
