An annual event that aims to help Connecticut’s veterans is taking place around the state on Friday – and coming to Stamford for the first time.
Connecticut Stand Down 2024 is a one-stop access to a variety of programs and services for veterans.
"Welcome to your house. This is the hall of heroes," said Army veteran Thomas Patterson, speaking about the Stamford Veterans Resource Center at Old Town Hall.
He, along with Thomas Finn and Carmen Hughes, have helped 250 veterans since it opened 18 months ago.
"There's a lot veterans out there suffering that need the help. They need services, they need benefits," said Patterson.
The trio is encouraging veterans who may be shy to come out and get help to attend the event at UConn Stamford between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday. There will be 60 vendors on hand.
"We're going to be giving out over 200 coats. We're going to be giving out toiletries, home care products," said Patterson.
Patterson says there will also be dental and health care screenings. He added that he is at the Stamford resource center on Tuesdays and Thursdays – or whenever they need help.
"A lot of times I want to quit because it’s too much. But I can't, because if I quit I'm failing them," said Patterson.
He says the event wouldn't happen without the support of the community.
"One team, one dream, one mission. That's who we are," said Patterson.
