Stamford police say a 54-year-old local woman was hit by a car and killed while crossing High Ridge Road
over the weekend.
It happened just north of the intersection with Turn of River Road—a stretch of the busy corridor that's filled with restaurants, stores and other businesses.
Police said they responded there around 10:30 p.m. after multiple 911 calls and found the woman with critical injuries. The driver who crashed into her was also there and cooperated, according to police.
"They just said they were going down the roadway and never saw anyone until the pedestrian was in front of them," Sgt. Jeffrey Booth told News 12.
The woman went to the hospital where she later died, police said. Flowers, a candle and a white ribbon now mark the site where the crash occurred. There isn't a marked crosswalk right there, but there are crosswalks not too far away.
"It's well traveled—maybe not at 10:30 p.m. on a Saturday, but there are people that do walk in that area," Booth stated.
Police are not releasing the woman's name yet, but Booth said she lived in North Stamford. It was unclear what she was doing at the time of her death.
"That's all going to be part of the follow-up investigation," Booth explained. "We'll speak to the driver again, try to get a formal statement and then look for any surveillance video that might be in the neighborhoods to help us find out what exactly happened prior to the crash."
Booth told News 12 that at this point, it doesn't appear alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors on the part of the driver.
This is the third fatal investigation for the traffic unit in 2025, according to police, which is down from prior years.
Anyone with might have witnessed the crash or has further information is asked to call police at 203-977-4712.
