Stranded travelers and airports are feeling the impact of the abrupt collapse of Spirit Airlines, with disruptions rippling across New Jersey.
Spirit accounted for about 75% of flights in and out of Atlantic City International Airport, officials say. Since the airline’s shutdown, the normally busy ticketing area has been left quiet and empty.
The sudden halt has left many travelers scrambling to rebook trips, while others say they have lost time and money.
“I had to pivot real quick and see what other airlines,” said traveler Mark Gerald. “I thought about Frontier from Philly and other airlines, and Allegiant had a flight today, so I just missed two days.”
Airport officials say relief may be on the way. The airport director says Breeze Airways is set to begin flights at Atlantic City International Airport.
State officials are also responding to the impact on workers. The New Jersey Department of Labor is planning free virtual sessions to help thousands of former Spirit employees navigate next steps. For information, click here.
